The Upolu day tour takes in the most appealing sites along the coastal road. The best way to tour is by hiring a car. Otherwise, several companies offer the tour from Apia: Samoa Scenic Tours operate from Aggie Grey's and the Hotel Kitano have their own tour, but both with doing the day tour only with a minimum number of people.
Most organized day tours head east from Apia along the rugged tropical coastline and include stops at Fatumea Pool at Piula before heading to the stunning Fagalua Bay lookout and then out across the scenic La Mafa Pass. The tour descends from the mountains to the stunning beach locations on the east coast, through the villages and beaches along the south coast, and back to Apia. Tours take about 6 hours.
It is often quoted that you haven't seen Samoa if you haven't seen Savai'i and I'll endorse that. The Savaii day tour is offered by several companies. Educational tours with an emphasis on the geological landscape are offered by Australian geologist Warren Joplin from the Safua Hotel on a prearranged basis. Tanu Beach Fales at Manase will organise a tour for their in-house guests if sufficient numbers can be gathered.
The Savaii round island tour takes about 8 hours and takes in the major sites including the lava fields, Manase Beach, Peapea Cave, Falealupo Canopy Walk, Legendary Sites, Lovers Leap, The Blowholes and Afuaau Waterfall.
